Death of Daria Pionko

It is with deep and heartfelt sadness that we learn of the death of Daria Pionko in Leeds on Weds 23rd December.

Our deepest sympathies are extended to her family and friends and all those who knew and loved her.

The murder of Daria comes at a particularly poignant time, less than 1 week after our campaign on 17th Dec as part of International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.

Gemma Sciré, Chief Executive of Basis Yorkshire, said: ‘All women in Leeds should have the right to live their lives free from fear, intimidation and violence. Basis Yorkshire will always remember Daria and with our partners we will continue to campaign for an end to violence committed against sex workers.’

A memorial was held on the evening of Wednesday 23rd December, with candles lit for Daria and flowers placed in remembrance.

We know many sex workers in Leeds will be very upset and shocked about this crime, and may be fearful. If you need support  in relation to this or any other matter contact 0113 2430036 or email info-basis@basisyorkshire.org.uk. Over Christmas and New Year Basis staff and volunteers will be providing additional outreach support to women working in the area.
