Supreme Court ruling statement – April 2025

As a charity we are concerned about the Supreme Court ruling last week over the definition of a woman as it used in the Equality Act 2010.

While aiming to achieve clarity for some, it has created more anxiety and fear for others.

The clarification that the rights of the trans community are still protected under the Equality Act does not remove the fears for the rights of trans people, already increasingly marginalised and facing hostility in society. Trans people are twice as likely as cis people to be the victim of a violent crime; trans sex workers are among the most marginalised and at risk. Trans young people face are at increased risk of sexual exploitation based on societal biases and stigma.

We await the updated guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission but in the meantime we will examine the entire judgement as soon as possible and speak to relevant stakeholders to ensure we understand any implications for us as a charity, our allies and partners which we will share an update on as soon as we can.

We support and respect the rights of the trans and non-binary people to live authentically and stand against any form of discrimination.
