At Basis Yorkshire, we aim to empower the people we support to build the lives they want for themselves and achieve the futures they deserve, by giving the right support, opportunities and understanding, whatever their background or experience.
We have had the privilege of witnessing Lucy’s* journey first-hand and would like to share her story.
Lucy was in her early thirties when she first met Basis Yorkshire on street outreach. When she first came to Basis, she was nervous of others and didn’t like to engage with anyone but her allocated worker.
She’d sometimes attend our drop-in Wellbeing Hub when waiting to see her worker, but she kept to herself and leave as soon as she could.
Lucy’s worker made sure to move at her pace, not pushing her beyond what she was comfortable with. Whenever Lucy arrived at the Basis office, staff would greet her, telling her they were happy to see her and introducing her to any new professionals that were in the Wellbeing Hub. Her worker explained what activities were on, with no expectation or pressure to get involved. Staff would give space for Lucy to join conversations, but if she seemed more comfortable observing, they would leave her be.
Overtime, Lucy started to stay longer in the Wellbeing Hub and engaging with other people. She started taking part in activities, such as painting, playing bingo and doing yoga.
Having re-built her confidence she now accesses support through other workers and those in Wellbeing Hub when her worker isn’t available. She has also started offering her support as a peer to others attending the Wellbeing Hub.
As part of the support, we offer to develop skills, confidence as well as earn additional income, Lucy is now part of our interviewing panel for new Basis staff, which means that we are able to recruit the right person based on the opinion of those who will use the service. She also takes part in paid research, influencing change for other people who have experienced the same as her.
“I used to be by myself but I’m taking part in so much now! I feel so much more comfortable talking to you and other people.” – Lucy
